An all-in-one vehicle emergency kit, an autonomous underwater vehicle and an advanced anti-mosquito system. These were just some of the astounding innovations designed with Dassault Systèmes’ SOLIDWORKS at the recent nation-wide Innovate Malaysia 2018 engineering design competition which is open to all final year degree engineering, computer science, and science & mathematics students in Malaysia.
Dassault Systèmes was the proud sponsor of Innovate Malaysia 2018’s SOLIDWORKS Technology Track which saw engineering student teams from USM (Universiti Sains Malaysia), UTeM (Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka or Technical University of Malaysia Malacca) and UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) compete for cash prizes and a SolidProfessor Membership that provides next-generation learning courseware in SOLIDWORKS. The finals of the SOLIDWORKS Technology Track was held on July 9, 2018.
This competition presented a great opportunity for university students in Malaysia to utilize SOLIDWORKS’ powerful simulation tools, photo-realistic renderings and 3D CAD design capabilities to tackle real-world engineering problems. Technology Track Champion – All-in-One Emergency Kit
Project title: All-in-One Emergency Kit

A road trip can be an exhilarating way to explore a foreign country. It’s a journey where you can curate your own route and make pit stops anywhere to take in the sights of the scenery. At the same time, there are inherent risks in any road trip in an unfamiliar land, such as a tire blowout on the highway, skidding on icy paths or a thick fog that obscures your vision.
To mitigate the potential hazards in road trips, Team USM came up with the MY370 All-in-One Emergency Kit designed with SOLIDWORKS that feature tools such as continuous LED strobe warning lights to capture attention and illuminate the dark, a hammer to shatter the windshield and a knife to cut the seatbelt, all contained within an ergonomic reuleaux-shape device.

Technology Track Runner-Up – Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV)

While flying drones have dominated the news headlines recently, we see just as much exciting potential in underwater autonomous vehicles (AUVs). AUVs can help to perform inspections of underwater pipelines and cables and greatly increase our ability to explore the mysterious depths of the oceans. Wouldn’t it be cool if we can go island-hopping along the coasts of Malaysia in an AUV that can glide from the land to the sea?
In their showcase video below, Team UTeM demonstrates their versatile AUV prototype design featuring four degrees of freedom, enabled to carry tasks such as pipeline inspections, ocean floor mapping and air crash investigations.

Technology Track Runner-Up – Advanced Anti-Mosquito System (Aamos)

Viruses spread by mosquitoes dominate the news headlines each year. Dengue remains a concern in Malaysia and other countries in Southeast Asia, Malaria infections are approaching crisis levels in Vietnam and the threat of the Zika virus still lurks in the background. The region is also vulnerable to the spread of other dangerous mosquito-borne diseases such as chikungunya and yellow fever due to the rise of global travel.
Effective anti-mosquito systems will always be on-demand. Team UTeM designed an Advanced Anti-Mosquito System (Aamos) that features an Artificial Neural Network to detect and estimate the population of mosquitoes in a given area. These estimates combined with rain density, humidity and temperature data can help authorities to pinpoint and mitigate potential dengue outbreaks. Take a look at their showcase video below.

Technology Track Consolation Prize – The Rubbish River Collector

Rivers are Malaysia’s major source of fresh water, contributing some 97 % of total water supply. Healthy, clean rivers support freshwater ecosystems that help to generate great economic revenues from fisheries. However, an increasing amount of debris from rubbish, trash and industrial waste are polluting our rivers, affecting the environment and threatening the health and livelihoods of many.
For this reason, Team UTM designed a Rubbish River Collector, an automated, environmentally-friendly and weather-proof device to reduce rubbish flow on rivers. Portable and easy-to-use, the Rubbish River Collector can collect up to 30kg of trash utilizing the flow of the river to drive its collecting mechanism. Technology Track Consolation Prize – IoT-Based Dust-Free Filter System
University: USM Project title: IoT-Based Dust-Free Filter System Team members: Lee Chien Hsien, Ng Jiann Jia, Choo Jie Liang Advisors: Dr. Mohamad Khairi Ishak & Dr. Teoh Soo Siang
Air pollution is a problem for people working in heavily industrialized areas. Exhaust from nearby factories emit hazardous air pollutants that can cause severe respiratory and heart conditions. Close proximity to these factories can clog up air-filtering systems of air-conditioning (AC) units rapidly.
For this reason, Team USM proposed a solution to enhance the air-filtering systems of AC units in the offices of workers stationed in such areas. The solution involves installing self-cleaning and dust level sensing systems that can be monitored real-time on the internet. This ensures that the air filters of AC units are regularly cleaned and replaced promptly.
