For the first time in history, most of this year’s Earth Day celebrations will be held online. With stay at home orders for a large part of the world triggering a positive environmental impact, things are looking up for global warming. This is not a moment to let up on global efforts on climate change, however. While pollution levels are reportedly falling across metropolises, we must start thinking about another concern: that the eventual renewal of activities will lead to another hike in pollution.

Keeping in mind the common goal of moving towards a better future and trying to make the best of a difficult situation, the world needs concrete solutions to tackle the growing menace of climate change, particularly once the immediate crisis of COVID-19 passes and a new normal takes hold. In celebration of World Earth Day, we want to highlight three projects that are bringing positive change to the world.

SparkCharge

In the past few years, renewable energy’s share of total final energy consumption has been on the rise. The automobile industry has long been a key focus area for those interested in renewables. Enter SparkCharge, which makes a modular, portable charging unit. This mobile on-demand charging infrastructure allows electric vehicles to charge anywhere. Thus, in 10-20 minutes, an electric vehicle can be sufficiently charged for a full day’s journey – alleviating the concern of some people who fear driving and not being able to have easy access to recharge for the return journey.

Agreenculture

As a sector, agriculture consumes immense amounts of energy and can have a deeply negative impact on the environment. Building on the importance of the growing agroecology sector – which merges agricultural needs with ecological practices – Agreenculture has developed a smart robot with guaranteed autonomy for 24 hours, with low financial risk for farmers, reducing consumption and waste by other means.

EEL Energy

Based on bio-mimicry, EEL Energy harnesses marine energy, generating electricity from marine or river currents. Simple and robust, the technology aids in providing access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy sources. EEL Energy’s product has the benefit of creating no noise or visual pollution and does not generate toxic waste or carbon dioxide; critical for modern marine energy harvesting.

World Earth Day is an occasion to reflect on our relationship with the planet that sustains all species; past, present and future. It is through innovative projects that we can collectively work to undo the ravages the Earth has faced.
