Recently, SIMULIA introduced the 2020 SIMULIA Champions, the inaugural team of brand ambassadors whose expertise and passion position them to advance the future of simulation technology. In this series of blogs, we will be introducing some of our individual SIMULIA Champions, finding out more about their history – and future – with the technology.
Min Jie is a CAE Engineer with world-renowned automaker Ford Motor Company, which is well-known as one of the oldest automotive manufacturers and the creator of the moving assembly line. Jie’s work at the company includes powertrain durability analysis and writing engineering test procedures, as well as being responsible for the rotor durability of all in-house motors.
Jie received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in China, both in the field of solid mechanics. He then began his career as a professor and spent several years in teaching and research. 10 years later, he went to Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a research professor, where he met a professor from the University of Michigan Dearborn. This professor was working on a project funded by the Ford Product Development Center, and he invited Jie to join his lab and work on the project. Jie accepted the offer and in 1998 went to Michigan, where he began pursuing a doctorate degree at the University of Michigan.
After receiving his doctorate in 2003, Jie spent two years in teaching and research at the University of Michigan before receiving a job offer from Ford.
“I stayed in that position for 12 years until 2018, and at that time Ford declared a massive investment in electric vehicles,” says Jie. “Engineers in traditional areas like transmission engines were encouraged to shift to the new electrical powertrain area.”
Jie applied for and received a job in electrical powertrain and joined his current team. He describes the atmosphere at Ford as an “intensive engineering environment,” where he works with many famous OEMs and suppliers.
“I started my career in the academic area, so I used to do research and teaching, which is quite different from industry,” he says.
Since his time as a university researcher, Jie has been using Abaqus, which is currently a major tool in his daily work. He began using it intensively when he came to Ford in 2006.
“During my career in the industry, I have witnessed the growing capability and widespread application of CAE,” he says. “Since I joined Ford as a CAE Engineer in 2006, high performance computing power has been expanded by about 10 times, so I continue to see improvement in both efficiency and accuracy in my daily job.”
A few years ago, when he was in Ford’s transmission department, Jie participated in the development of eight-speed and 10-speed automatic transmissions, and he describes how CAE played a large role in the project by saving a great deal of time, material and testing. CAE is “a sort of environmental preservation tool,” he adds.
Outside of work, Jie enjoys reading and watching videos as well as playing golf. He also recently resumed painting in watercolors and oils. Jie describes himself as a hardworking person who tries to keep busy both on the job and in his free time.
