“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #BreaktheBias.” – International Women’s Day

Break the Bias

It’s the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) — a day dedicated to honoring the achievements of women throughout history and across the globe. It’s celebrated annually every March 8th to mark the “social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women; to raise awareness of discrimination and bias; and to inspire and empower us all to take action for equality.”

Its message is current and the roots are deep. In fact IWD dates back to 1975 when the United Nations began formally recognizing the achievements of women, bringing with it a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. It has been observed, however, in one form or another long before then: since the early 1900s! At that time in history, the industrialized world had a booming population growth and the rise of different ideologies. This was especially the case among women. Years of women’s oppression and inequality had challenged women to have their voices heard and campaign for change.

It was in 1908 when more than 10,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. Move forward to 1911 and IWD had exploded to gain support of over a million people worldwide. IWD collectively belongs to everyone and is not specific to any country, or group. It has also become a national holiday in many parts of the world.

Many companies since then have honored the day with celebrations and recognitions of their own employees. Our DELMIA employees — and in fact throughout Dassault Systèmes — will celebrate with showcasing photos, attending learning sessions, and more across the world.

Focus on STEM

With many industries providing extraordinary opportunities for women, one area of focus for IWD is in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) career. Today, one of the goals of IWD is to help pave the way for women in STEM and in particular, technology. According to the IWD website, its Mission is “To celebrate digital advancement and champion the women forging innovation through technology.”
