From System Engineering to Analysis and Design for the Best Digital Products Engineering:

In this session, we present state of the art of ongoing major activity integrating MBSE with SysML together with design, analysis and model management capabilities in PLM engineering and business model based enterprise environment. We will share 30 years of ongoing effort integrating UML and SysML Object Management Group (OMG) standard based software and systems modeling solutions. This include mapping data, leveraging interchange and modeling standards. Result of work contributes to new version of the UML, SysML and interchange standards. Specifically session will present work in state of the art integrations between SysML and PLM. This contributes to Model based Systems Engineering ecosystem expansion and digital engineering strategy support. This is enabled by increased popularity of modeling standards for systems engineering which introduced formality in discipline and ability to apply semantically rich mapping between modeling of different disciplines like system engineering, analysis, design and requirements. We will demonstrate work done with Cameo / CATIA Magic – SysML modeling tool, and 3DEXPERIENCE by Dassault Systèmes PLM platform. Even specific software is used all the integration methods and workflow is universal and can be applied for other tools. We will cover five major integration points including optimal metamodels mapping, workflow, and integration method. We cover system architecture in SysML For the Best Digital Products Engineering and:

  3. Simulation, workflow automation, optimization
  4. Design continuity
  5. Traceability and baselines

1. Digital Engineering Motivation

The U.S. Department of Defense has challenged its suppliers to make a paradigm shift from legacy engineering practices to an “integrated, digital, model-based approach” (Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Systems Engineering 2018). As systems development programs have become more complex, the need for model-based approaches has become an essential facet of aerospace engineering (Davies 2019). In conjunction with increasing complexity, the expected delivery time of products continues to shorten; requiring methods that enable design for manufacture concurrently with product design (Hartmann et al. 2004).

2. Model Based Systems Engineering Ecosystem

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is a recognized approach to effectively address the scale and complexity of the
development of modern systems (Madni & Sievers 2018).
Practitioners often interpret the term “MBSE” as interchangeable with “SysML”, a predominant language for system modeling.
However, to apply MBSE connectivity to requirements, analysis, design and manufacturing, is the need to extend the system model beyond SysML and systems engineering. This paper describes this important advance in MBSE.

3. Process Flow in best digital product engineering

Presented process flow and integrations Figure 2 reflects the common perspective of the system model as an integration framework (Friedenthal, Moore & Steiner 2015). In this view, the system model integrates with design, analysis, and requirements shown in Error! Reference source not found. as adapted by NAVAIR, with emphasis added (Cohen 2018).

4. Case Study in best digital product engineering

All the integrations are presented in straight to follow practical sample covering simplified system and right details level. Scenario starts as we as an engineering team got new product request. New type of hearing aid medical device. Our team of systems engineers, business analysts, 3D CAD designers, product managers, and software architects started they work. Management is visionary and embrace digital engineering (DE) and model based systems engineering (MBSE). We as systems engineers shall keep all parties on single page, eliminating silos by enabling DE with MBSE. Figure 3 present haring aid medical device system model in SysML integrating requirements, PLE, 3D CAD design and analysis models.
