Using virtual twins to create an immersive review process

By adopting the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to generate a virtual twin of projects, companies like L&T Energy Hydrocarbon are able to provide virtual reality reviews for customers.

Imagine if, instead of explaining project plans to a customer by referencing paper drawings and complex engineering data, you could walk them through each detail in virtual reality.

For those companies that have established a common digital thread across all systems, this is now possible.

Indian firm L&T Energy Hydrocarbon is one example. Using Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud, the engineering company has been able to create contextualized 3D virtual twins of its large and complex engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects. These global projects are completely custom built so there are no standard processes. LTEH receives the front-end engineering design principles from the client which provides the preliminary scope of work. It’s up to LTEH to design and deliver all materials on time and on budget while adhering to various health and safety and sustainability requirements.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud provides a common digital thread across all of L&T Energy Hydrocarbon’s projects. Data from the platform is then transformed into a 3D virtual twin accessed via NETVIBES data science solutions. This virtual twin is used to provide immersive virtual reality reviews for customers, enabling them to check for clearances and issues.

“Every project we do includes multiple dimensions, which we have added to our virtual twin,” said Atul Paranjape, LTEH’s vice president of group digital and IT. “We started by adding time to create a 4D experience. Then we added budget as a fifth dimension. Other critical dimensions such as safety, quality and collaboration followed so we can visualize, measure and predict progress in each of these dimensions.”

LTEH also hopes to get to a position where it can pass on these virtual twins of current projects to its customers. “Passing on the virtual twin will give them a foundation for growth and help them future proof their business in the same way that we are doing for our organization,” Paranjape said. “This is a massive win – it demonstrates that we really care about our clients’ future.”
