Prefabrication is changing the construction industry as we know it. Instead of having all materials shipped to a construction site and built on location, there’s a growing trend toward producing more components and modules off site in factory-like settings. Amid labor shortages, unpredictable weather conditions and stringent health and safety regulations, it’s helping to reduce onsite risk and speed up installation and quality.
“As the pressure grows for us to work faster and keep our workforce safe, we need the capabilities to plan ahead and move to a productization approach,” said Patrice Bard, managing director of Bouygues-Thai. “That involves using advanced machinery and equipment, embracing digital technology and introducing new approaches to become more socially responsible while reducing our environmental impact.”
For one particular project, Bouygues-Thai was tasked with improving the design process for a prefabricated concrete wall structure. The company needed a design application that could turn design rules from its subcontractor, Texca Wall, into detailed 3D models and generate the associated work instructions. It was the perfect opportunity for Bouygues-Thai to try out the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on Cloud.
Using CATIA on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, Bouygues-Thai managed to not only design the wall layout for Texca Wall, but provide the quantity of panels for each floor, complete with dates for manufacturing and delivery, plan the process and virtualize assembly know-how. Its team gained the ability to automatically generate the 3D models of the prefabricated wall panels within a few clicks, saving significant time both at the design stage and during construction thanks to the perfectly designed prefabricated walls and clear work instructions.
