Supersonic travel is back and better

Boom Supersonic is designing and manufacturing a supersonic airliner described as one of the most complicated safety-critical machines ever created.

Twenty years after Concorde was decommissioned, Colorado-based aviation startup Boom Supersonic says it will bring back supersonic travel.

“Concorde was a technological marvel for the 1960s,” Boom’s founder Blake Scholl told The Guardian. “But they weren’t focused on the economics, and it became too expensive to fly.”

A London-New York return flight on Concorde cost the equivalent of about US$12,000 in today’s money, whereas Scholl says a ticket on Overture, Boom’s supersonic commercial airliner, will eventually cost the same as a standard airline ticket now.

This won’t even be the primary improvement: Overture will run on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) – cutting its carbon emissions by up to 90% and completely removing sustainability as a barrier to travel. In fact, Boom believes it can achieve net-zero carbon dioxide by 2025, and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Overture is the world’s fastest airliner optimized for safe and sustainable supersonic travel. That’s why Boom sought a world-class technology platform that would not only help it take Overture through design and production, but would also facilitate internal and external collaboration with global top-tier suppliers.

Enter Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, including CATIA for 3D design, ENOVIA for product data management and SIMULIA for realistic simulation.

“We’re excited to be using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform because it allows not just our own engineers to work on the airplane but also brings our suppliers and our design partners into that same platform so that everyone’s working on the same model of the airplane,” Scholl said. “Then, when we go to build the airplane, we know everything’s going to fit correctly for the first time and be optimized across all the systems.”
