Interview with Damiano Casalino, Winner of the 2023 CEAS Aeroacoustics Award

SIMULIA’s own Damiano Casalino was recently awarded the Council of European Aerospace Societies’ 2023 CEAS Aeroacoustics award. This is presented to those who have made outstanding contributions in the field of aeroacoustics.Damiano is an expert in aeroacoustics with his work at SIMULIA relating to PowerFLOW and OptydB. He is also a full-time professor and chair of aeroacoustics at Delft University of Technology (one of the most important aerospace faculties of the world) and on the Stanford list of the 2% most impacting scientists. We caught up with Damiano to find out more about his career and passion for engineering.

How did you feel when you found out you won the CEAS Aeroacoustics Award 2023?

I felt very happy for having received this award, not at retirement age as it usually happens, but now that I can still contribute significantly to the reputation and business success of my employing institution.

What inspired you to become an engineer?

It was actually my second choice! My initial idea was to study astrophysics, following my greatest passion, but then I decided to study aerospace engineering, where I fell in love with the classic theories of fluid mechanics developed by scientists like Ludwig Prandtl, which have strong mathematical similarities with the classical theories used in astrophysics.

What are you most passionate about in the field of engineering?

I love aeroacoustics, as the junction between fluid mechanics, one of the most fascinating branches of physics, dealing with several unclosed problems like turbulence, and the wave theory, the most non-intuitive branch of physics involving several fascinating phenomena, which require a deep mathematical knowledge to be understood and treated.

What has been your proudest moment at DS? Do you have any highlights from your career that you’d like to share?

The time when my company was acquired by Dassault Systèmes, as my expectations were high, both in terms of business and personal career development.

Any advice for engineers who are just starting out?

If they have a passion for scientific and technical work, to invest the best of their fresh brain resources in deepening knowledge of fundamental aspects involved in their scientific or technical topic, and then chose a company or an institution that has the capability to deploy their potential.

If they have a passion for business in a high-tech environment, instead, I would recommend developing the capability to recognize and reward others’ scientific and technical skills.

In both cases, I would encourage them to develop a wide ethical attitude to counteract the social and cultural deterioration afflicting humanity.
