During the DELMIA Ortems user club meeting held on March 7 and 8, BIO SPRINGER’s Supply Chain Planning Manager and Supply Planner, Pierre Augeard and Sandra Candry, sat down with Dassault Systèmes to share their insights. Below, the key takeaways.
It’s all a matter of yeast!
LESAFFRE Group subsidiary, Bio Springer, is one of the largest producers of yeast extract and natural fermentation-based ingredients. Over time, the Company has made it its ethos to develop novel solutions for the nutrition industry, with a laser focus on tastier, healthier food that is of natural origin. Bio Springer products are used to elevate tastes and nutrients in a large number of foodstuffs, ranging from ready meals and snacks to sauces and broths. Drawing on its expertise in fermentation processes and upholding its commitment to sustainability, Bio Springer promotes a more balanced, flavorful diet that benefits people and the planet. To this end, Bio Springer leverages DELMIA Ortems, Dassault Systèmes’ very own manufacturing planning and scheduling software. “These past 5 years, we utilized DELMIA,” commentedPierre Augeard, the Company’s Supply Chain Planning Manager who introduced MP (Master Planning) modules that oversee planning and the PS (Production Scheduler) to determine production scheduling. “Bio Springer’s story spans over 150 years,” added Augeard. That said, the entity has firmly set its sights on the future!
Introducing DELMIA Ortems… the obvious choice
Pierre Augeard, who spearheads Bio Springer’s supply chain, saw the DELMIA Ortems rollout as a “way of adding credibility and professionalism to the entire process.” In years gone by, all planning was “manually” and single-handedly completed by this most seasoned of professionals. “Establishing a shared overview of our planning tasks was absolutely top-of-mind, as opposed to Excel files that could only be used and understood by business experts.” The goal was to consolidate business while ensuring planning continuity as well as incorporating more collaborative features into production.
Bio Springer’s decision to select DELMIA Ortems signaled its intentions to harness tools adapting to business pressures across the board, reducing the time taken to kick-start production. “In any manufacturing company, the planner serves as a ‘head chef,’ also acting as ‘air-traffic controller,’ so to speak. Their role is to prepare for bottlenecks and prevent stemming production flows.” Experience is not always the answer in addressing this perennial problem, particularly when time-to-market is increasingly under strain. “Not all plants can manufacture every single one of our products while cycle times differ per facility. The complexities involved are staggering and all too prevalent,” said Augeard. By tapping into the data and algorithms of DELMIA Ortems, planners’ day-to-day is forever changed.
Turning vision into action…
In the space of a week, DELMIA Ortems measurably benefited production at Bio Springer. “We went live with the solution at the end of 2018. Then, one week later, I swapped my Excel file for DELMIA Ortems.” 2019 saw the Company commission the Production Scheduling module. For Supply Planner, Sandra Candry, “what makes things especially complex at Bio Springer is that we must contend with multiple, overlapping supply chain pressures.” In this context, the ability to model schedules factoring in all these multifaceted restrictions means anyone can overcome a wide range of pressures, irrespective of expertise. “Thanks to DELMIA Ortems, we have simulated 84.25% of supply pressures in our system.,” Candry stated. Whether it’s facilitating planning (and planners’ daily workflow), streamlining production, tackling pressures head-on, or bolstering processes,DELMIA Ortems is up to the challenge!
