More than 390,000 customers worldwide rely on our solutions, reflecting our evolution from a specialized software provider into a trusted business partner for organizations of all kinds.

Over the last 45 years, Dassault Systèmes has continually expanded the possibilities of the virtual world. Through innovation and strategic acquisitions, we’ve extended our market reach through new technologies and industry diversification, while maintaining a consistent focus on science-based solutions for solving increasingly complex challenges.

We describe each distinct period of that evolution as a generation, with each one building on the technologies and knowledge that came before it — and opening the door to what comes next.

  • 1981-1989: 3D design
  • 1989-1999: Digital mock-up & product data management
  • 1999-2012: 3D product lifecycle management
  • 2012-2020: 3DEXPERIENCE
  • 2020-2025: Virtual Twin Experience of humans
  • 2025-present: 3D UNIVERSES

It’s been almost half a century of progress. Let’s take a look back at how we got here:

1981-1989: 3D Design

Because of our origins and name, some people assume Dassault Systèmes builds airplanes. We don’t—but our aerospace roots shaped our earliest innovations as a digital design studio.

During this first generation of our company’s history, we focused on 3D computer-aided design, precision engineering and 3D modeling, developing technologies capable of supporting increasingly complex products and systems.

1981: CATIA launch

In 1981, we launched our first product, CATIA. For more than 40 years, CATIA has been a leader in CAD and modeling and the 3D backbone and digital foundation for the development of many widely recognized products, including aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, Ford vehicles and much more.

The same year, we signed a partnership with IBM, establishing a long-term worldwide marketing, sales and support agreement.

1989-1999: 3D Digital Mock-up & Product Data Management

1989 ushered in a new era for Dassault Systèmes, marking the beginning of our second and third generations. Extending from 3D design and CAD, we moved toward 3D digital mock-ups (DMU) and product data management (PDM), setting the stage for later innovations like product lifecycle management (PLM). While 3D design virtualized pre-assembly of simple objects, 3D DMU opened up the design of complex systems in context. PDM introduced collaboration around projects and programs.

1994: Industrial expansion

While we’ve maintained a presence in the aerospace industry for almost 50 years, the 1990s marked the period when Dassault Systèmes began expanding into other industries. During this decade, we began to also serve partners and customers in the consumer goods, high-tech, shipbuilding and energy industries. This gradual expansion allowed us to apply 3D design and engineering tools to a wider set of product development challenges.

1996: IPO

Dassault Systèmes made its IPO in June 1996 with a double debut in Paris’s Euronext and a listing on New York’s Nasdaq. Investor demand was significant, with the initial offering 35x over-subscribed.

1997: SOLIDWORKS acquisition expands a design-centric portfolio

In 1997, we completed our first major acquisition: SOLIDWORKS. Today, SOLIDWORKS is one of the leading CAD software providers. It’s a go-to tool for engineering teams, students, start-ups and everyone in between. Acquiring SOLIDWORKS enabled a significant expansion of the customer base that Dassault Systèmes continues to serve, powering both enterprise and mainstream product design markets and allowing anyone to become a maker.
