As the world moves toward sustainable energy sources, train operators like Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe’s (NWL) in Germany recognize the need to switch their diesel-powered fleets for more environmentally friendly alternatives. It’s why they’ve placed one of the largest orders in the world for new generation battery-electric trains – a move, they said, will save 24,000 metric tons of carbon emissions per year.
Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) submitted the winning bid to supply and maintain the 60-plus strong fleet of Civity BEMU trains, which will serve the Rhein-Ruhr/Westphalia region’s 18 million residents. For the Spanish railway systems manufacturer, an order of this size is a clear indication that it’s heading in the right direction to meet its customers’ ongoing needs.
Drawing on over 100 years of experience, the company has shifted its attention to developing urban mobility solutions that lower energy costs and usage, and pave the way for a sustainable future.
“By drawing from firmly established technological and human resources, we’ll increase and diversify our transit portfolio and respond to social demands for sustainable mobility,” said Joseba Amenabar, technical director of CAF Rolling Stock Operations.
To support its expanding portfolio of sustainable transport solutions, CAF needed to upgrade its design and product lifecycle management capabilities. The company committed to a major digital transformation and moved its business processes to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, allowing it to unify its design and engineering processes, manage all product attributes within a single environment and speed up innovation.
