Why is Earth Day always on April 22?
The first Earth Day started when former United States Senator Gaylord Nelson promoted the idea, requesting students to protest environmental causes in 1970. April 22 of that year happened to be the time between spring break and final exams, considering it to be the optimal time for students to participate. Today millions of people in 192 countries who unite in environmental causes observe it. The non-profit group, Earthday.org, coordinates it for April 22 of every year.
Goals of Earth Day
The primary goal of Earth Day is to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our planet’s natural resources and promoting sustainability. It’s a day for individuals, communities, and organizations worldwide to participate in activities and initiatives that contribute to environmental conservation.
Embracing sustainability
Whether it’s on a personal level or at your place of business, sustainability can be achieved by adopting the right practices. This includes minimizing waste, reducing energy use, recycling materials and implement energy-efficient technologies. By using eco-friendly products and services you can drastically reduce its environmental impact. Businesses that create products can meet the increasing consumer demand for sustainable products by leading to a shift toward smart factories and digital supply chain networks. Recent studies have indicated that sustainability is good for business, rewarding those companies that have sustainability objectives.
An eco-friendly manufacturing environment
The demand for sustainable manufacturing is expected to increase as consumers as well as governments expect changes from the manufacturing sector. Manufacturers will need to embark on a digital transformation that allows them to evolve to an enterprise that meets all sustainability concerns, including:
- Product design with sustainability in mind
- Forging the factory of the future
- Powering the industry through renewable/green energy or more ethical material sourcing
- A circular economy and supply chain that reduces waste and addresses recycling or second life product
- Move to a paperless environment
Individuals can make Earth-friendly changes by:
- Implementing a recycling program
- Donating unwanted items
- Investing in lights that automatically switch off
- Prioritizing reusable office supplies
- Hosting a clean-up day with employee volunteers
- Reducing single-use Items
- Sourcing sustainable materials
