I have been interning at BIOVIA for five months as an analyst on the strategy team. As an MBA student at UCSD, I was eager to apply classroom concepts to real-time business scenarios and gain invaluable business acumen through hands-on experience. My colleagues on the BIOVIA Strategy team have been nothing short of exceptional. Having previously worked in both large corporations and start-ups, I find BIOVIA’s strategy team offers the perfect blend -the best of both worlds. It combines a large company’s organization and resources with a start-up’s agility to continuously assess the ever-changing industry, making this the perfect team to understand any business.
As an intern, I assist my team by curating market research and competitive intelligence for the life sciences and material sciences software industry. While it was overwhelming at first to tackle this mammoth domain, my industry-expert teammates guided me in understanding the industry dynamics and in curating a strategic plan for BIOVIA and our products to remain competitive in the market. This meant I was frequently reading industry journals and newsletters, and creating notes to stay updated on where the market was headed to identify business opportunities.
MBA modules taught me a great deal about the business world. Over the last two years, I have taken many classes in finance, product development, product management, and business strategy. While these classes teach these concepts individually, working with the BIOVIA strategy team allowed me to fully immerse myself in the confluence of all these business skills. My team and the projects I did helped me gain a holistic view of an industry, while also enabling me to quickly adjust my focal length to analyze a competing product down to the finest details, including how different AI applications were being used to accelerate development and workflows in the industry.
“As an engineering graduate, I’ve always been comfortable analyzing complex data. However, my experience as a strategy analyst intern allowed me to sharpen my technical skills while simultaneously learning to communicate complex data as presentable, actionable, and insightful business cases for senior executives.”

This involved preserving the crux of the solution without oversimplifying or overcomplicating it. The confidence my team has instilled in me is invaluable and this support resonates throughout the organization, making BIOVIA the perfect place to learn, grow, build, and thrive.
