Recently, SIMULIA introduced the 2020 SIMULIA Champions, the inaugural team of brand ambassadors whose expertise and passion position them to advance the future of simulation technology. In this series of blogs, we will be introducing some of our individual SIMULIA Champions, finding out more about their history – and future – with the technology.

Lin Biao Wang is an EMC Engineer at Continental Automotive in Singapore. The company is a large and long-lived one, begun in Hanover, Germany in 1871 and now stretching across 60 countries with approximately 240,000 employees. Wang is part of Continental’s automotive technologies group, and is responsible for creating EMC concepts for projects, test plans, and finding solutions to general issues.

“EMC design is not based on rules and personal knowhow and experience,” Wang says. “For sure, knowhow and experience are important, as they prevent us from making the same mistakes again; however, I’m a strong supporter of numbers and figures, hence I believe that it’d be more convincing to myself and my colleagues and even the customers if we can present this data out. So there are times when I am required to evaluate the impact of the test setup during the measurements, and this comes in handy when it involves simulations as these are a very exciting way to present data.”

Wang originally applied for an automotive engineer position at Continental in 2012, but when the manager learned about his expertise in CST, he offered him a position as a high speed design engineer. In 2018, he changed his position to EMC Designer to build the team’s capabilities in EMC modeling and simulation. During his time with the company he was given the title of Technical Expert in high speed electronics simulation, and he also works as the location expert spokesperson, helping to build community across all business units in Singapore.

Outside of Continental Automotive, Wang is part of an outreach program where he and other experts visit universities and give technical talks and highlight the importance of expert careers. Wang himself is a graduate of Nanyang Technological University, where he received his Bachelor, Master and doctoral degrees. He knew from a young age that he would go into engineering.

“I like to see how things work,” he says. “I’m quite strong in both mathematics and physics, so it became natural for me to delve into the field of engineering.”

Wang describes his greatest success as building his career with Continental Automotive. He has achieved plenty of other professional successes, however, including receiving the 2019 IEEE EMC Young Professional Award and contributing to several papers for IEEE.

One of his greatest challenges was determining the path of his career with Continental, which has two main paths: technical and management. Wang’s work is mostly technical, but he is also inclined toward leadership. Regardless of his position, he feels at home at his company, and enjoys the day-to-day challenges the job presents.

“I like challenges and puzzles,” he says. “I guess not many people see problems and hiccups in their work like I do. The most important thing that brings me back is the work environment I have here. In my office I have access to various test equipment and the software tools to help me design simulations. This office is like a home to me too.”

When he is not at work, Wang likes to read about various topics including self-improvement, travel, science and engineering. He is also a fan of jogging, and one of his favorite hobbies is cooking and figuring out which beverages to pair with foods.

On July 15, Wang will be leading an eSeminar in which he will present how he uses CST Studio Suite to model and analyze ESD field coupling from the harness to the DUT.
