Dassault Systèmes (Euronext Paris: FR0014003TT8, DSY.PA) is leading the drive towards a sustainable new era for Thailand with virtual twin experiences in the development of future mobility solutions and smart city planning.
The advent of sustainable mobility is set to provide new investment opportunities, enhance competitiveness and facilitate new job creation to support the growth of Thailand’s automotive industry.
Renewable energy, smart transportation systems, and electric vehicles (EV) play a significant role in Thailand’s sustainable economic development goals, as the country targets to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2065. Furthermore, Thailand is aiming for 30% of all locally manufactured vehicles to be electric by 2030 under its ‘30@30’ policy – positioning the country as a major electric vehicle production center in Southeast Asia.
One of the issues that besets mobility is rapid urbanization. Thailand’s population is projected to grow by 11 million by 2050, with 73% living in urban areas. The rapid expansion of cities presents three major challenges: the readiness and ability of infrastructure to cope rapid urbanization, increased traffic congestion, and growing environmental pollution.
Heavy traffic, largely comprising internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, is a major contributor to poor urban air quality and carbon emissions. With electrification driving the future of mobility, cities are pushing for a transition towards EVs, which will help reduce air pollution. The push for EV adoption drives automotive manufacturers to design, engineer and produce EVs more efficiently, innovatively and sustainably.
Innovative digital technologies will play a critical role in enabling Thailand to scale up production and meet demand, transform the automotive industry, and remain competitive and attractive for manufacturers to operate their plants. Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform and virtual twin experiences can also be incorporated in the planning of mobility infrastructure in cities, making cities more livable and smart.
Said Ng Aik Hock, Director, Cities & Public Services, Asia Pacific South, Dassault Systèmes: “Presently, 85% of the world’s electric vehicles are developed with Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform. By creating virtual twins of the vehicles and testing them in a virtual but realistic manner, manufacturers can accelerate the speed and reduce the cost of development across various dimensions. Furthermore, they will be equipped with insights to incorporate sustainability throughout the product lifecycle. Also through the collaborative 3DEXPERIENCE platform, urban planners, energy providers and automobile manufacturers can optimize EV charging infrastructure to meet the city’s needs. Virtual twins can help to plan and measure accessibility of proposed EV charging stations based on key parameters like distance, populace and existing infrastructure. At Dassault Systèmes, we are ready to support Thailand’s big ambitions to make the future of smart mobility a reality.”
Ng further explained how virtual twins can be used to support policy-making through modeling and simulation, providing insights on the impact on air quality with the conversion of more ICE vehicles to EVs. While looking forward to the future of mobility, improving the present state of mobility should still be continued. Virtual twins can be effectively used to plan for new highways, roads and cycling paths, or enhance the comfort of walking in the city including barrier-free pedestrian journeys.
