A Virtual Twin is a digital representation of a real, physical system – or of a design or a prototype of one – that captures and replicates the behavior of the system. However, in most processes today, such results often take hours or days to compute and require expert knowledge even for routine calculations,” explains Whiting.

To bridge the gap between designers and analysts, Dassault Systèmes has pioneered the unification of modeling and simulation, called MODSIM. This means CAD geometry from the designer can be used directly as the basis for simulation, ensuring that the Virtual Twin represents the actual product. Updates to the design are automatically leveraged by the simulation, and simulation results can be directly used by the designer to improve the design. Now, recent breakthroughs in machine learning and AI are pushing MODSIM further.

“It’s a new form of MODSIM where the simulation results are actually coming through trained AI models of the physics behavior of that Virtual Twin,” says Whiting. “Simulation results data for many different variants of the design can be used by analysts to train models representing a Virtual Twin’s physics behavior.
